My name is Shelby, I am 26 and I studied Music Education and Violin Performance at Northern Arizona University. I am a certified Suzuki instructor for both violin and viola. I am a previous section violin member for The Flagstaff Symphony and The Sedona Symphony. I spent my time in college playing in symphonies, chamber ensembles, as well as solo repertoire. I have experience in teaching private lessons and group lessons from the NAU Music and Dance Academy and The Flagstaff School of Music as well as the full public school classroom at Marshall Magnet Elementary.
Violin and viola are very technical instruments that require a strong foundation. The more I learned about the Suzuki Method, I realized it targets building excellent technique while also encouraging students and parents together in their musical journey - a combination vital for the success of students. As a Suzuki teacher I stand by Dr. Suzuki and countless other teachers who all believe that Every Child Can. Students can learn and flourish if provided with the tools they need. Young students have amazing benefits from Suzuki instruction such as increased working memory, fine motor skills, and coordination. My role as a teacher is to provide students and parents with the instruction, tools, and skills they need to succeed in their journey as a violinist or violist.
I teach violin and viola from age 3 to college prep and piano from ages 3 to 12. I use a blend of the Suzuki method books and other supplementary repertoire. I encourage students and their parents to work together in this musical journey to give my students the best environment possible to learn these new skills. I give students the patience and support they need to learn not only violin and viola, but music theory and appreciation as well. I offer a 30 minute complimentary trial lesson to anyone interested. I also offer general music and basic theory lessons to young students using Michiko Yurko's Music Mind Games method - great for home school families who want to expand their horizons into music.
